CyberXero: AI-Augmented Initial Access Broker Behind Theft of 628,000 Ukrainian Records

CyberXero: AI-Augmented Initial Access Broker Behind Theft of 628,000 Ukrainian Records

CyberXero is a Russian-speaking initial access broker that combines Cobalt Strike and custom WordPress exploitation with an AI layer of Claude Code agents and PentAGI. Dual pipelines target global WordPress and e-commerce sites and Ukrainian energy infrastructure, with more than 628,000 Ukrainian records confirmed stolen. An exposed open directory revealed the operation. This article covers the attack stages, indicators of compromise, and defensive guidance.

Summary

CyberXero is a Russian-speaking, financially motivated initial access broker that combines commodity offensive tools with an AI orchestration layer. Reporting describes two concurrent pipelines: a global, automated campaign against WordPress and e-commerce platforms, and a curated campaign focused on Ukrainian energy and critical infrastructure. Confirmed exfiltration from four Ukrainian organizations involved more than 628,000 records belonging to Ukrainian individuals. The activity has been observed since at least July 2026 and was still ongoing when researchers published findings.

The operation came to light after an open directory at 46.21.250[.]135 exposed the actor’s live working environment containing on the order of 90,000 files, including AI session logs, scripts with plaintext tokens, exploitation tooling, and stolen victim data. AI support is reported in two layers: up to 51 specialized Claude Code agents on the primary workstation, and PentAGI connected to a Cobalt Strike Team Server for payload generation and penetration-testing execution.

Background

Initial access brokers (IABs) specialize in breaking into networks and monetizing footholds often by selling access or stolen data—rather than always operating ransomware campaigns themselves. Commodity stacks such as Cobalt Strike, webshells, and public exploit code remain common. What stands out about CyberXero is the scale of AI-assisted orchestration used alongside these tools: specialized agents for scanning, exploit chaining, reconnaissance, and post-exploitation, plus a separate AI pentesting framework wired into Cobalt Strike.

The dual-pipeline model separates high-volume, automated access hunting from slower, selective work against Ukrainian energy and utilities. In the opportunistic stream, the operation runs at industrial scale: one automated run scanned 4,708 targets, confirmed access to 429 WordPress administration panels, and deployed 32 webshells in a 61-second window. In the directed stream, operators manually prioritized Ukrainian critical infrastructure, including energy and a district heating provider in Kharkiv.

CVE-2026-63030 and CVE-2026-60137 are separate flaws that, when chained together, enable the pre-authentication WordPress compromise known as wp2shell. CyberXero’s custom wp2shell package operationalizes that chain for mass exploitation. CVE-2026-4815 was reported weaponized within about 30 days of disclosure. Internet-exposed Redis was also abused in Chinese infrastructure compromises but is a configuration exposure, not a CVE entry in this table.

Attack Methodology

Public reporting describes CyberXero as running two pipelines on shared infrastructure: a high-volume automated stream against WordPress and e-commerce properties, and a selective stream against Ukrainian energy and utilities.

  1. Target discovery. Automated scanning builds large target lists for the opportunistic pipeline; reporting cites more than 56,000 identified URLs and a single run against 4,708 hosts. The directed pipeline focuses on Ukrainian energy and utilities, including curated reconnaissance against multiple entities in that sector.
  2. Exploitation. The opportunistic stream uses custom tooling around the WordPress wp2shell chain (CVE-2026-63030 and CVE-2026-60137), Support Board SQL injection (CVE-2026-4815), and testing of Magento issues (CVE-2015-1397). Internet-exposed Redis was used in compromises linked to Chinese infrastructure. In one automated execution, 429 WordPress administration panels were confirmed accessible and 32 webshells were deployed in a 61-second window.
  3. AI-assisted orchestration. On the primary workstation, up to 51 specialized Claude Code agents support scanning, exploit chaining, reconnaissance, and post-exploitation. Separately, PentAGI is connected to a Cobalt Strike Team Server through an AI-provider API for payload generation and pentest-style execution. Session logs recovered from the actor’s open directory show requests framed as an authorized pentest against “own” infrastructure and session resets after model refusals; some refusals still blocked high-risk actions in individual sessions.
  4. Foothold and control. Successful WordPress compromise is associated with rogue administrator accounts and WSO-family webshells installed as plugins. Commodity post-exploitation tooling in the broader stack includes Cobalt Strike. Infrastructure recovered from the investigation spans roughly eight nodes used for scanning, provisioning, staging, monetization, and command-and-control.
  5. Collection and impact. Confirmed exfiltration from four Ukrainian organizations involved more than 628,000 records tied to Ukrainian individuals, including a large subscriber dataset from a Kharkiv district heating provider. The opportunistic pipeline is oriented toward access volume and payment-related data; the directed Ukrainian pipeline’s end monetization path is not fully established in public reporting. Related activity is also reported involving Poland, China, and the Netherlands.

Mitigation

  1. Patch WordPress plugins and CMS components promptly, including Support Board (CVE-2026-4815) and other components in the wp2shell-related chain. Do not leave Magento or PrestaShop running on unpatched legacy builds.
  2. Audit WordPress for rogue administrators (especially wp2_ + eight hex characters), unexpected active plugins, and WSO-family webshells.
  3. Remove internet exposure of Redis; require authentication and review authorized_keys on hosts that were exposed.
  4. Block and hunt traffic to reported infrastructure such as 46.21.250[.]135 and 42.193.227[.]214, and review Cobalt Strike–style C2 patterns in network telemetry.
  5. For Ukrainian energy and utilities operators: review internet-facing customer portals, access logging, and data-export paths; treat large-scale subscriber data exposure as both a privacy and physical-safety concern in conflict zones.
  6. Treat AI agent session logs and plaintext tokens in operational directories as sensitive as credentials, as this campaign was mapped largely because those materials were left world-readable.

WordPress Security Alert: Critical Bricksforge Vulnerability Exposes Sites to Remote Code Execution

A critical vulnerability in the Bricksforge plugin for WordPress is being actively exploited, allowing unauthenticated attackers to upload and execute arbitrary PHP code on vulnerable websites. Tracked as CVE-2026-85097, the flaw stems from insufficient validation of file metadata during form submissions. Successful exploitation can enable attackers to compromise websites, access sensitive information, deploy web shells, and establish persistent access.
